Around us, a few of the many boats had a good bite at night or at daybreak, but most did not. its seen many 50-80lb yellowfin over the last few weeks and has not skipped a beat .
Hook and Jankowski in the pit ran down to the Toms Canyon to follow the water we had been fishing in in the Hudson Canyon last time out. Capt. Mark DeBlasio was once again guiding the 48 Canyon Runner and also headed to the Toms but took up residence on the east wall.
The party boats informed us that Friday night some of them had over 20 bites (one boat had 2 dozen yellowfin) so we were looking forward to it continuing into Saturday night and it did. The night started off slow but it steadly picked up and when the sun came up the charter had fought 16 big yellowfion and 2 longfin putting 10 yellowfin and 2 longfin in the boat.
In just 2 hours of fishing they hooked 12-15 bluefins and brought 9 to the boat. They ran off to the tip of the Hudson and put it on the troll for the rest of the day but only managed a single 30 pound yellowfin.
Both boats left the dock with their Monday-Tuesday charters looking to once again put their time in on the Bluefin inshore early in the day and the canyons later in the day. Capt. Mark Jankowski and Capt. Ryan DiBagio had the 48 Viking out with the Todd Polumbo charter and also ran right to the Bluefin grounds north of the Bacardi and had instant action.
At first light we started to set out our spread and by the time we had two baits in the water, we were tight on a fish. Condidtions were awesome and we stayed on that drift for the next hour catching 12 tilefish up to 35lbs to finish up what turned out to be one of the best day trips I have ever done
They arrived around 3pm and by 6pm had a nice pick of fish in the boat. They went 5 for 7 on yellowfin on the afternoon troll with most of the fish in the 60-80 pound class along with a couple 35 pounders.
They finished up a stretch of 5 overnighters in 7 days with an open boat trip and had another very slow one just ahead of Hurricane Earl. One thing for sure the Canyons were churned up by Earl for the last 2 days so hopefully the fish moved back up on the bank from wherever they swam to.
On Monday-Tuesday s trip on August 30-31 with the Dick Steer charter Capt. Mark pieced it together again. Trolling the Hudson Canyon produced 1 for 2 on longfin before the night, the night produced 2 makos with one killed and 1 released and with not much else going on Capt. Mark gave the boys from Connecticut and extra hour on the trip and what an hour it was they hooked a nice big-eye on a blue white Ilander and 45 minutes later they boxed up a 186 pounds eye-ball.
